An earthquake measuring 5,9 on the Richter scale took place at 08:53 in Iran’s Hoy province near the Turkish border. The earthquake affected the Başkale and the Saray districts of the eastern province of Van province. In the aftermath of the earthquake, a total of 66 aftershocks seven of them measuring higher than 4,0 took place in the area.
After the earthquake 13 search and rescue teams from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) as well as teams from the Başkale Gendarme, the 112 emergency and UMKE arrived in the area. According to recent reports, search and rescue activities were completed as there were no persons trapped under the debris; while rehabilitation activities concerning accommodation and nutrition needs are underway.
AFAD has sent 1.160 units of 16.5 m2 tents, 264 units of 28 m2 tents, 20 units of 112 m2 general purpose tents, 6.120 blankets, 616 beds, 360 pillow cases and sheets and 1.200 heaters to the area.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Red Crescent has sent food supplies, service personnel and vehicles. Since now, the Turkish Red Crescent has distributed hot meals to 3 thousand people and it is planning to serve hot meals to another 2 thousand people.
The Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Polices sent psycho–social support teams to the area.
Tents were set up in the damaged villages.
According to the first assessment in the aftermath of the earthquake, 254 houses and 297 barns collapsed and 694 buildings were heavily damaged.
In the aftermath of second earthquake measuring 5,9 on the Richter scale at 19:00, it was reported that there were no loss of life or serious injuries.
The Provincial Disaster and Emergency Management Center was established in the Başkale District Governorship in order to carry out required services.
To the attention of people:
People must not enter damaged buildings in the disaster area. Babies, children, seniors and disabled persons must be supported.
